Texting People

General Information

Breeze allows users to text one or more people at a time for quick communication. The texting tool is meant for one-way communication and cannot receive replies. Churches can send 250 text messages per month at no additional charge. While we do pay for each text (and so need to have boundaries at some point), you're welcomed to enable unlimited texting1 to exceed the 250 monthly limit. It's just one penny per text after the first 250.

On the technical side, when a text message is sent to a group of people, Breeze sends individual text messages to each person in the group. If, for instance, you send a text to 30 people, Breeze will send out 30 individual texts, all containing the same message, one text being sent to each number (and counting as 30 texts toward your limit). By way of another example, if you send one message to 200 people, that counts as 200 texts toward your limit. Breeze will automatically filter out duplicates (if a multiple people have the same mobile phone number) and only send one text per phone number (and only apply as one toward your limit).

Note: The character limit for a single SMS message is 160 characters, this is an industry set limit and there is no way to increase the limit at this time.

How many texts do I have left?

To see how many remaining texts are left each month, you can open the text compose box and at the bottom, to the left of the cancel tab, it will show you how many remaining texts you have.

At this time the phone number that sends texts cannot be changed. Replies cannot be sent to this number, as it is a one-way text. Please note that text messages will only send out to numbers in the mobile field. If a mobile number is in the 'Home' field, the message will not send to the mobile device.

Individual Texts

  1. Navigate to a specific person.
  2. Click on that person's mobile phone number to bring up the compose text window.
  3. Compose your text and click "Send Text Message."

Group Texts

  1. Pull up the list of people you'd like to text (by running an advanced search, searching by tag, or another method).
  2. On the right, select "Text People."
  3. Compose your text and click "Send Text Message."
1 By default, texting is limited to 250 messages per month. To exceed this limit, enable "Unlimited Texting" within General Settings.

Scheduling Texts

While by default text messages will send right away to the list of recipients, users can also schedule a text to be sent at some point in the future. To do so:

  1. Compose your text message to an individual or a group as you normally would.
  2. Instead of clicking "Send Text Message," click the arrow just to the right of the "Send Text Message" button and select one of the available options1 to send the message in the future.
If you'd like to see what's scheduled to be sent in the future, when it's scheduled, or remove a message before it's sent, you can access your scheduled messages within your text history. To access text history:
  1. Navigate to "User Settings" > History > Text
  2. Select a text to view its details. The details screen will also provide a way to unschedule/remove the message if desired.
1 All times are in your local timezone as specified within your account's General Settings.

Restricting Texts

People who do not want to receive text messages from Breeze can either:

  • Reply to a text message with the word "STOP" (this will disable all text messages from Breeze)
  • Have their mobile phone marked as "Do Not Text." This setting is available by navigating to their profile and clicking to edit their phone field. (This will prevent the profile in question from receiving group text messages sent through Breeze but they will still be able to receive individual text messages from Breeze. Including Volunteer Reminders which are sent as individual messages.)

Short-Code Number Sent from US Texts

We’ll help you inform your members about their messaging options by automatically sending them the first time they receive a text message from your Breeze account. This message is sent just before we pass along your message or reminder.

Things to know:

  • Breeze handles this automatically and there’s no action required on your end.
  • This first-time confirmation message, sent only once to each number, is free to the church and will not go against the free 250 messages per month count.
  • This message will include the name of your church and information on how they can opt-out of texts if desired.
  • Texting the word "START" will allow them to start receiving texts again

Number Sent from Non-US Countries

Canada and UK have a long phone number with the code from their country.
All other countries will have texts that come from a 415 Area Code (US San Franscisco).

While the subscription is billed from "anniversary day-of-the-month," text messaging is billed by Calendar month.  Your 250 free text messages will reset on the 1st of each month.

Breeze uses two different providers to send text messages, depending on whether it's text giving, US, or international accounts:

  • International Long Number
  • Some early text-to-give accounts

  • US Shortcode number: 874-47
  • The remaining text giving accounts

Texting Outside the US

By default, Breeze will assume that all phone numbers are in the same country as your church.1 When preparing to send a text, we'll automatically format it according to your country so it sends correctly.

However, if you are attempting to send texts internationally, you will need to include the plus symbol along with the country code so that Breeze doesn't attempt to reformat the text according to your own country's specifications.

For example, if your church is located in the United States and you want to send a text to someone in the United Kingdom, you would want to format phone numbers similar to:

+44 20 5555 5555

However, if your church is located in the United Kingdom, you can simply use your local format such as:
020 5555 5555
Below you will find what countries are supported for texting within Breeze and their corresponding country codes.2

Australia +61
Bahamas +1
Brazil +55

1 Your country can be set within Account Settings > General Settings.
2 If you don't see your country on the list, please email us as we may be able to add it in to the country code list.
Note that Breeze may use a different sending number depending upon the destination of the text. For example, a text to Vancouver, Canada will come from a US/Canada phone number while a text to London, England will come from a United Kingdom number.

  • Hey @kaylenesquitieri!

Thanks so much for reaching out. Happy to help!

If you are sending out a text via the RSVP section or even a regular text-the character limit for the name is 15.

This can be adjusted in the Account Settings of the Breeze account.

    Hope this is helpful.

  • re: dhodgesbatzka

I have the same questions that dhodgesbatzka had regarding what is required of us legally regarding texting opt-in and 'standard rates may apply' messages.

Also, I have the same interest in two-way texting as drtom.  Is there a discussion board somewhere on the breeze platform where users can provide suggestions that would greatly benefit us?

    Thank you

  • Hey @hannah!

Thanks for reaching out! Great question! The 'standard rates may apply' only applies to texts that are sent back. Since we are a one way communication text service, it doesn't apply.
As far as texting opt-in's, we highly suggest that you seek local legal advice for all your tools for compliance with the laws. However, we are continuing to monitor this as it is our desire to serve all our churches well.

Also, you can absolutely use our feature request page to submit suggestions: www.breezechms.com/features

However, due to the number of ideas we get from our subscribers, we're not able to provide further updates about the status of your submission here. I recommend subscribing to our blog to stay updated on future feature releases!

  • @Emily W.

Thank you for the responses and the links!

    Many blessings

  • Is there any way for an auto-response to send back to those who try to text back? Currently, when you text back, the text goes nowhere, and the person texting doesn't know that. I don't want them to think that we're ignoring their texts. Is there any way to incorporate an auto-response if someone tries texting back like, "We're sorry, but this number can not receive messages. Please email or call the church with any questions."

Our way to counteract this so far is to include something like this in the text itself, but that takes up the majority of your characters available.

  • Hey @fehr!
At this time we don't have an auto-respond feature with the company we use to provide shortcode texting. What you're doing is probably the best option for now as I do the same: posting a short message that "replies do not work" and/or "please call the office if more information is needed". You're absolutely right though, it does eat into those characters a bit. Most people know it's a 1-way communication after the first couple of announcements since the text thread is saved on their phone, but your feedback here is really helpful for us as we continue to look for ways to improve Breeze :)

  • I'm trying to email my form respondents, but every time I select "Email People", the email box opens up and says "No Recipients" in the To line.

I have added each form respondent into our People system.  I realized when they are added, the system is not populating their email information into the Contact Info section of each person's account.  How do I get it to add this information without having to do it for each individual?

  • @sarah

Thanks for reaching out to the Breeze Forum. Based off of your explanation, you should be seeing success here! Here's an example: https://cl.ly/79464e2cbdc2  -- If you're seeing different results than this, you may want to try this in multiple browsers (Specifically Google Chrome) to see if you're getting the same results!

If this continues to be a problem, give us a call so that we can walk through it with you!

  • Breeze Management Team, please consider increasing the character limit for texts. This is a great service available through breeze but the character limit really restricts the usefulness. If necessary I would be glad to pay more to be able to send a longer text. Thanks and keep up the great work!

  • @jeffm

Thanks for taking a moment to reach out to the Breeze Forum! We appreciate your Feedback concerning the Texting functionality in Breeze and would suggest Submitting Feature A Request.

Customer feedback is the #1 way we make changes in Breeze!

  • Is there a way to add a default to all texts that says: "Do not reply"?

  • Hey @tim,

That's a great question!  As it turns out, there's not a default that says that.

    I hope this helps!

  • We've tested someone replying STOP to a text, but they keep getting the text message. Is there a setting that I am missing? Is there a way to see who is requesting to stop receiving texts?

  • @office

There is not a way to monitor a list of people who have requested the "Stop" option, however, they should be exempt from any future messages. If this is consistently not working for you, please contact our Support Line with the names and numbers of those who are still receiving messages so that we can troubleshoot this for you.

  • I sent a message to myself to test it out.  My phone received the message and I tried to reply to see what it would say.  Unfortunately, it doesn't say this number does not receive text message.  Do I have to use my limited character space in the message to tell people that?

  • @info

Great question here! Your suggestion is precisely what we see most churches do. Most will add a short blurb like "do not reply" in order to alert the recipient not to reply to the text.

Prayerfully, this information has been helpful to you!

  • Regarding Breeze texting to a tagged group of people.

    1. Can we attached files to the texts? (Photos, Videos, PDFs, etc)

    2. Can we included a URL link to a file, photo or video? Will it be received as a clickable hyperlink to the people receiving the text?

  • @agomez

    Let's address your questions:

    1. Can we attached files to the texts? (Photos, Videos, PDFs, etc)

    • Unfortunately, no. The only way you'll be able to include these in Texts is if it's through a link. If the file is already stored online somewhere, then you could use the link within the Text message.

    2. Can we included a URL link to a file, photo or video? Will it be received as a clickable hyperlink to the people receiving the text?

    • Yes! This is exactly what we suggest.

  • Can texts be merged? Like with the recipient's first name?

  • Hey @jenregophotography,

Great question! At this time we do not offer a feature that allows for the merging of the first name. However, I think that is a great idea. I would suggest Submitting Feature A Request so that our team can look further into this!

    Blessings! :)

  • Hi - this is my first time asking a question here - so let me lead with "Great Job! - we love Breeze and wow it's working great for us - so thanks!"

Now to my question - I know that I can schedule a text to be sent to multiple people at a specific time of my own choosing - my question is: Is there any way to schedule a REPEATED text? . . . Say, to send the exact SAME text to the SAME people at a given time every day?  Or on a specific day each month?

Right now I am writing individual texts to a tag, and scheduling them for each repetition.

(We're reading thru the Bible in a year, and we send out a text every morning at 7, that is linked to our webpage that is updated daily with that day's reading - while I understand that our congregation could simply click the message from the day before - many of them appreciate the "ding" in the morning, and since we also offer a way to LISTEN to the scripture being read aloud - it reminds them to log in and listen on their way to work)

    Thanks again . . . for everything

  • @josbrit

Great question! Based off of your question, it sounds like you are wondering if a text can be repeated or recurring. Unfortunately, that functionality is not available within Breeze. In order for you to send out your Bible reading each day, you will need to schedule a separate text to go out for each scripture. There is no way to make this "recur" so that you can add different verbiage each day. We understand this isn't the most "Breezy" strategy, but it is the only way this can currently be done. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause!

  • @Stephen Ivey

Thanks for your PROMPT response . . . I was wondering... is there a way to send out the exact SAME text on a recurring basis - with NO change in verbiage whatsoever?

Could that be set up in Breeze as it is now?

  • @josbrit

No problem! Unfortunately, the answer is no. You would have to copy the verbiage from your text and paste it into a NEW scheduled text. There is no way to recur/repeat a text automatically within Breeze. It would have to be done manually.

  • Hello...is the feature available for texting a code and receiving a link in response? Similar to what a lot of brands do to sign up for discounts and such.

  • Hey @sandranoble582

Great question. Unfortunately, the answer is no. Our texting tool at this time is a one way communication tool.

  • Is there a "view" in which you can see those who have unsubscribed? How do you "resubscribe" someone?

  • @jordan

Gray question here! Unfortunately, this is a limitation of breeze. There is no place to actually see a subscribed or unsubscribed list. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.

As far as how to resubscribe someone, you would need to make sure that they have not previously marked in the email from Breeze as spam. If they have, simply contact us and we will be able to remove their name from our suppression list.

  • You can block people from getting group texts. But can you block people from getting texts from a certain tag?  So if they're tagged in one group but don't want the group texts they don't get it but another group they do.  For example,  a daily text with bible reading they don't want the text (just the email) but the youth group texts they do want.

  • @whatfield

Great question! Unfortunately, this is a limitation of Breeze. We don't currently have functionality this granular for Texting. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause!
