Giving by Text

Allow your attenders to express generosity in a whole new way with Text Giving.

With Breeze's Text Giving, donors can give via credit card, debit card, or bank account (ACH), and can set up recurring giving, all by texting an amount to your church's Text Giving number! Your church can even customize your Text Giving and allow your donors to give to specific funds with the use of keywords.

Activate Text Giving

  1. Navigate to "More" > "Contributions" > "Online Giving."1
  2. Look for the Text Giving box on the right side in the middle of the page, and click "Activate."
  3. Select the number you would like to use  to receive text gifts and click "Confirm" to enable text giving.2


1 If you haven't already, enabled online giving. Online giving is a prerequisite for text giving.
2 We'll display a list of numbers from what we assume is your own area code. You can always change the area code by clicking the link in the lower left of that window to adjust your area code.
We are unable to add numbers to the list of available text giving numbers, as this is outside of our integration.

Text Giving Settings

As an organization, you can specify the default fund for text gifts and set up additional keywords for giving to specific funds. To adjust these settings:

  1. Navigate to "More" > "Contributions" > "Online Giving."
  2. Look for the Text Giving box on the right side in the middle of the page and click "Settings".1
  3. To set the default fund change the "Text Donations Go To" drop-down to the fund you would like text giving without a keyword included to be designated to. 
  4. Click "Add Option To Give to a Specific Fund" to set up additional funds eligible to be donated to via text message. 
    • In the "Keyword" box, enter the keyword you would like givers to use, and select the fund from the drop-down that you would like this keyword to go to.
    • For example, you could set up a keyword of "building" and if someone texted "$50 Building" then $50 would be donated to the building fund.
    • There should only be one "keyword" per fund (capitalization does not matter - keywords are not case-sensitive). If you set up multiple keywords for one fund the giver may receive an error code stating that fund does not exist.

  5. Make your changes and click "Save."


1 This assumes you have already activated text giving.
Note: Text givers will get an email confirmation receipt, while one time givers also receive a text confirmation of their donation, recurring givers will not receive a text confirmation, only an email.

Donate By Text 

To donate by text, a donor simply:

  1. Text the amount they'd like to give to your text-to-give number (e.g. $50). Remember to include a space between your dollar amount and your keyword. If a user submits $50Missions, they will receive a "Sorry, not sure what you meant" error message. The proper format must be $50 Missions in order for the command to be received properly.
  2. If a person has donated by text before, they'll receive a text in response confirming that their gift has been received successfully and they're done.
  3. If it's the first time a person is donating by text, they'll be sent a message that says, "It looks like you are a new giver; to begin: (link provided). It will be a link to the church's online giving page. Clicking on the link they will be asked to supply their payment method (credit card, debit card, or bank account). This payment source will then be linked with their phone number so that, in the future, all they will need to do is text in the amount. (They will not need to re-enter their payment information.)
  4. If the donor didn't specify a fund by keyword, donations will automatically go to the default fund in Breeze. Example giving by keyword: $50 missions Note: Donors can only give to one fund at a time.

Text Giving Commands

The following is a list of example commands that the text giving system accepts:

Command Description
$50 Donates $50 to your church. Users can type any amount; the dollar sign is optional (e.g. $50 and 50 both work).
give $50 Same as above.
give Your text giving number will respond asking "how much you'd like to give". Telling people to text 'give' to your number can be a more succinct way to communicate text giving.
$50 missions Donates $50 to the missions fund. You can customize fund keywords and what fund they point towards. Note: Donors can only give to one fund at a time.
$50 weekly Sets up a recurring gift of $50 each week. Frequency options are 'weekly', 'biweekly', 'monthly', and 'yearly'.
$50 missions weekly Sets up a recurring gift of $50 each week to the missions fund. Frequency options are 'weekly', 'biweekly', 'monthly', and 'yearly'.
refund Refunds the previously given contribution. 1
update Allows a donor to update their payment method or recurring gift.2 Your text giving number will respond with a link where users can make these changes.3
unlink Unlinks a user's phone from the text to give system.
commands Provides the user with a list of the available generic text commands (will not include the unique specific keywords you have set up for your church)
All text gifts will appear on contribution reports as Method: Text (card) or Text (ACH) unless the text giver is a first time giver to the church (who hasn't given online before). In that particular case, when giving via text, that gift will appear as “online” gift and not text.
1 Donors can only refund their own gift with this command within 24 hours of giving the gift. If the previously given contribution started a recurring gift, the recurrence will also be canceled.
2.   If a person needs to update their name associated with the payment method (which will be associated to the Contribution receipts emailed) they will use the "Update" command and be sure to enter the accurate name with the payment method update.

3. You can only update recurring gifts via text when the recurring gift was established via text giving. To learn how to update non-text-originated recurring gifts visit View and Modify Recurring Donations If a person needs to update their name associated with the payment method (which will be associated to the Contribution receipts emailed) they will use the "Update" command and be sure to enter the accurate name with the payment method update.
Currently, there is no way to disable keywords, they must be deleted if you don't want them to be active.

  • Is there a report that I can run to see how often the text to give is being used? Looks like text giving gets lump into batches that just say "Online".

    Great question! Currently there is not a report to see how often the text to give is being used. However, it does break down whether the gift is text or online. You can simply run a report with a date range and then scroll to the bottom of the batch report to see how many gifts were given by text. 
    In this screenshot below you can see there was a 1 Text gift based off the number in parentheses:

    While this may not be the ideal answer you were hoping for, I do the information is most helpful.

  • @Emily - Thanks! That worked. The report feature is great. The more I play around with it the more that I see that it can do. I was running all sorts of reports yesterday in prep for a Lead Team meeting.

  • If someone texts-to-give, will it show up under their name when yearly contribution reports are sent to the members?

    Yes, when someone uses text giving the gift will show up under their name when yearly contribution statements are sent. The first time someone gives you may have to associate the gift to their profile and from that point on it will connect automatically.   • Is there a feature available that gives contributors the option to pay the extra % for credit card costs?

    Great question! This feature does not currently exist within the breeze giving platform, but it has been requested several times. Our team is currently looking at the option of etiquette in the future but there's no guarantee of when or if it will actually happen. My suggestion would be to submit a feature request an order to add your voice to the chorus of the others who have submitted it and impress upon the breeze development team the importance of this feature for our customers.   • RE: keyword for a fund. It says in the help: "Note: There should only be one "keyword" per fund." Is there a problem if there are multiple keywords for a fund. 

    Example: Our Teen group has multiple fundraisers through the year to go away to camp. If has a keyword for our Teen fund - "pies" (for their pie fundraiser - people can text dollar amt + pie)....or we add another as it comes up..."flowers" for their poinsettias for there would be multiple keywords for the same fund...would that create an issue?

    Great question here! Although I do not have irrefutable proof that this will produce an error, I will say that we did not suggest it. I believe the note was originally placed in our documentation because of an error that persisted. Please so there's anything else that we can do to serve you!

  • How can we get one the short numbers for text to give? Do we need to link Breeze to another platform? Or can Breeze provide a short number?

    Unfortunately, this wouldn't be possible via Breeze. The only short code that's available is via Text message and that is assigned to you based off of your location. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.

  • Is Breeze planning any other applications for texting besides giving, for example text "newsletter" to receive link to current newsletter?

    Great question! That feature has been requested, but I don't know if it's officially been added to the roadmap. Feature requests are the number one way that we make changes in Breeze! I suggest adding to your voice to the chorus of the others who have suggested this feature so that it will stress the importance of its necessity within Breeze.   • Our church has been using Breeze and online giving for several years, and is considering adding text-to-give... will there be an additional charge to our monthly fee to Breeze?

    No additional charge! The same transaction fee will apply as your online giving. 


  • I enabled text giving and attempted to test it but my card was declined. What would cause this? my card is not expired and my account balance is large enough to handle my small $5 payment.

    Great question! I recommend giving us a call so that we can jump into your account to troubleshoot potential causes to this. There could be a few contributing factors that we need to discuss!

  • Hello. In an effort to decrease spread of Coronavirus, our church (and many others) are moving to online services this week and for the foreseeable future. We will be sharing our text to give number and online donation URL, and we expect to have several people donating at the same time from various locations. Do you foresee any problems with this? 

  • @info Using text and online giving during this time is a fantastic use of technology! There is no limitation on text giving multiple times in one location. For online giving, there is a limit to the number of payments/gifts that can be made through your giving page from any one location (for example, 3 donations within any 15 minute period). This is a protection measure to be sure your church doesn't get attacked by fraudsters. You should not have any issues with text or online donations and we hope they serve you well during this time! 

  • Is Giving by Text available in Canada?  If so, is it based on CAD$?  


  • Trying to scramble to get this done today, as tomorrow is Sunday.

    I've added text to give to our account. BUT, it isn't processing. I've put in our bank info, but it seems to be "thinking about it" rather than enabling it.  How long does it take to activate/verify the bank account so that it will allow folks to give via text? It says that an "administrator" has to add the bank info, and I've done that.

  • Is there a way to have the different accounts set up in Breeze show up on the toggle switch on the smartphone? Example: I set up keywords 'tithe' for General Fund and 'building' for Building Fund. However, on my phone it will only show the default account which is General Fund on the toggle. Does this mean the person must type in the keyword? If they just type in Give 50 I thought the options would show up on their phone.

  • I have the same questions send2david had regarding if the giving by text works in Canada. If it does, does it process in Canadian Funds? Are there local Canadian phone numbers available for this?

  • It does work in canada and in canadian funds. When we set it up there were options for local phone numbers. We tested it ams donations came through nicely. We are still testing refunds given by text to give.

    Those are great questions, and @Send2David is exactly right! Text giving in Canada works with Canadian credit cards, processes in Canadian dollars, and can be sent to a local number. :)

    Additionally, refunds work the same way as other online giving gifts. Simply click on the amount in the report or in their profile and select "refund."

    how can I go about guiding our church members to update their card after it expires or want to donate with another card but already have their cell number registered to give on the text to give number???

    • Update - Allows a donor to update their payment method or recurring gift. Your text giving number will respond with a link where users can make these changes.
